The Mightly Little Hummingbird and #mailart, #snailmail from Bayou Quilts

We visited with Chris, Amelia, and Bryce Eleanor Tuesday night before Chris left for Georgia.  A hummingbird had flown into the window and was stunned and unmoving; hours later, it was alive, but still not moving.  That night, B.E. and Amelia tried feeding it, and finally did get it to eat a little sugar water, but it couldn't, or wouldn't, fly.  Wednesday afternoon,  B.E.  sent a text message that the tiny creature had successfully overcome the trauma and flown away!

Mail:  Finally, I'm beginning to catch up on the mail I owe!

Almost Halloween! from Bayou Quilts

Stinker finds the little quiltlet comfortable.

I made Drop Dead Fred several years ago.

I didn't make a single Halloween creature this year.  Spooky.
Last year, I made quite a few things, including the frame and black cat, but this year...nada.

This year, I only pulled out a few decorations.
Much less to put away.

I thought the Monarchs were gone, that they had made their way to South Texas or all the way to Mexico.  Then every day for the last few days, more passed through. :)

The skeleton doesn't always find a convenient place, but this year he did.

They spend most of their time sleeping.

I love letters written by old friends, blog friends,  and family.  I also enjoy historical letters and epistolary novels.  I especially love young people who write letters.  When I saw this article, my admiration for these young girls
and their correspondence provided an extra zest to my ...

September 19 from Bayou Quilts

We will miss this remarkable woman.

First Spider Lily

Mother was born on Sept. 19, 1925
Jo Eleanor Sledge McDowell

I miss her and rarely does a day go by that I don't think of her.
I wish I'd asked her more questions about when she was young
and even about when my brothers and I were young.

After reading that Annie (Freezeframe) is already making Halloween postcards, I realized how lost in time I am.  Days, weeks, months simply move on leaving me surprised that a week has passed, even an entire season passes with little difference and few markers.  This is a symptom of lockdown, I suppose.  Not that I was ...

Monday, Monday from Bayou Quilts

We  had some rain last week and the promise of cooler temperatures--yes, 93 degrees is cooler.   I've been reading,  playing upstairs making postcards, and doing a little embroidery while watching New Tricks on Hulu.

I had to get some more lab work done since my thyroid has been up and down since May--high, low, high.  New prescription each month.  While there I decided to go ahead and get my flu shot.  Another thing off the list.

Months after filling the trunk of my car with things for Goodwill, I finally made that trip!  Now, I can put my groceries ...

The Eve of September from Bayou Quilts

It is difficult to believe that the Summer of 2020 is
edging into the Fall of 2020 and we have been in such a state of
uncertainty since the Spring of 2020.
I can imagine that we will be referring to 2020 in these terms
for years to come.

Time for the morning cup of coffee.

--  Fee brought Belle, his office cat home for a visit during Laura; she is still here because the power is still off at his office.  Bell is a tabby like Edgrr, but her face is sweeter, more feminine, and her fur is soooo soft ...

I don't care which party you belong to, the USPS is important to all Americans.  It is not a profit-making organization; it is a public service.  No other company or corporation is forced to set aside money for employees who haven't even been born yet.

Reading, Gardening, Mailing, and Fighting Mosquitoes from Bayou Quilts

Books/Reading
I've discovered a new author (for me).  Dana Stabenow writes the Kate Shugak books set in Alaska.  The setting and characters are so vivid, I feel as if I have been there and met them.  I've already finished the second in this series, and I've enjoyed them both.  I've only reviewed the first one.

While Stabenow's Kate Shugak in an Aleut and concentrates on investigations and the indigenous culture of Alaska, Saumya Dave provides a look at Indian culture (from India) in America.  Well-Behaved Indian Women examines the cultural differences between those born ...

Monday, I think... from Bayou Quilts

Bryce Eleanor had a school assignment that required an "older relative," so she emailed me for three pics and three childhood memories.  I'm certainly the oldest grandmother.

(Amelia says B.E. is keeping up with her online assignments.  That is something else that interests me--how teachers are doing with lesson plans and grading and other elements of online learning.  I like this assignment from one of her teachers.)

This is one of the pics I sent her.

People thought we were twins!

The photos and memories were from Beeville, TX and Casper, Wyoming,
and it was fun to ...

This and That from Bayou Quilts

After weeks of little traffic, things are picking up, which is a little worrisome.  We went to pick up some groceries; it didn't take long before they were brought out and put in the trunk.  I like the convenience of ordering online and picking up what we need, saves time and exposure.  Plenty of fresh vegetables was the big hit.  :)

Perennials are coming back, slowly.  Most of the garden looks pretty bare.  Except for weeds, which I work on a little each day.

Saving the United States Postal Service
Key background: This is not the start of the USPS’ troubles. Although the Postal Service is allowed to act as a monopoly, it does not receive tax dollars and is self-funded through postage. It has substantial debt resulting from the requirement that it pre-fund retiree health benefits. Still, coronavirus is a fresh new challenge that could reduce delivery volume by 60%.

Fearing that the Postal Service’s demise would make voting more difficult and destroy the livelihood of its workers, supporters of the agency got hashtags including #SaveTheUSPS and #BuyStamps were trending over the ...

Miscellaneous Assortment of Topics :) from Bayou Quilts

Dementia is something that almost all of us have some personal experience.  This video is about Bournmouth University's trial using Tai Chi with dementia sufferers and their carers.  Preliminary results find fewer falls among patients who participated.  An added benefit is that both patients and carers enjoyed the process.  I still love Tai Chi, although I rarely practice any more, but given this impetus, I may return to a daily practice.  Well, I'll think about it anyway.

Stitching, Snail Mail, Reading from Bayou Quilts

Stitching.  I began working on a second panel for 25 Million Stitches as soon as I finished the first one.

Silly.  I don't know why, but feeding the worms is much more amusing than feeding the cats.  Another smoothie should keep them happy for a while.
Sometimes I just put a Ritz cracker topped with a lettuce leaf from the garden and a banana slice because it makes me laugh at the idea of the worms feasting.

Mail.  I really like this envelope, simple and lovely.  Jacque makes the most beautiful cards and her Christmas card below is one ...

Maybe...Fall Is Here from Bayou Quilts

On Oct. 4, we finally got rain!  And a little cooler weather (low 90's) that has refreshed the garden.  Soon I'll have to pull up annuals that have continued to bloom with zest, but while they continue to bloom, I resist.  The low, bushy zinnias I planted this year have been such a delight of color, and I'm collecting a few seeds to try next year.  Not that I have a problem with buying the plants, because the way they spread out was so fast, covering more area than I anticipated.  While tall zinnias are still a ...
